BELITTLING the threat of climate change a nameless correspondent (HAS, Feb 13) points out there have been many such changes in earth history, they are perfectly natural – so what are we worried about?

Indeed it’s true, there have been many such episodes – and each has been accompanied by wholesale mass extinctions.

One, during the Permian period, threatened the very existence of life itself.

Were there now to be another, this time due to our own greed and stupidity, there is every reason to suppose it would endanger our survival as a species – and, alas that of millions of other species.

Were the unnamed correspondent to take these facts on board – which clearly they haven’t – they might be rather less laid back and complacent.

In particular, they might hesitate before making snide references to Sir David Attenborough – one of my, and doubtless many other people’s, heroes.
