THE idea that was mooted in the Echo recently that the Government’s HS2 rail building programme will benefit the environment is an insult to our collective intelligence.

As everyone knows, rail fares are extortionate and way beyond what an ordinary person can afford.

No, the work now going on is for the benefit of fat cats and the otherwise super rich. It will enable them to travel to their numerous expense account jollies in the conditions of wanton luxury they are used to.

It has no basis or justification in moral, social or financial reality and to claim it has is an exercise in imposture, cynicism and con-artistry.

Were I younger and had the means of getting there, I would be joining Swampy and his heroic companions under Euston station.
