THERE was absolutely nothing wrong with the original free holiday schools meal vouchers. They were a great idea.

These vouchers could not be spent on products such as alcohol, cigarettes or scratch cards.

Despite this, some Conservatives in the Tees Valley, including my local MP for Redcar, Jacob Young, claimed they were widely abused as if he was hosting an episode of the Jeremy Kyle show.

The alternative to the voucher scheme is a nutrient-deficient box of leftovers, not even fit for landfill.

Questions are now being asked about how these contracts came about, worth £200m, I believe.
