AS the owner of a Weardale startup business, Gardner’s Sourdough Bakery Ltd, I write to welcome the significant investment Durham County Council (DCC) is making in the Weardale Railway (TWR) (Echo, Sept 17).

The ambition of the TWR and The Auckland Project (TAP) to link Weardale back up to Darlington is particularly exciting, it would mean someone could step onto a train in London or Edinburgh/Glasgow and not have to touch a road until they reached their stop in Weardale.

The opportunities for growth of local businesses is huge, indeed with an increase of tourists in the order of 160,000 we can begin to build a sustainable future for Weardale.

Equally, any potential service run for Weardale would mean that we can reduce the number of cars on our busy roads, and therefore CO2 emissions, in turn making them safer for children and cyclists.

Now is the time for a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for Weardale, I for one say yes to that ambition and future.

Owain Gardner, Wolsingham.
