WATCHING pupils pour out on to Clare Avenue and Nunnery Lane in Darlington on Thursday, you could be forgiven for thinking it was an episode of that popular countryside competition One Man and His Dog.
Young people flocked together like sheep, as if being herded by an invisible shepherd.
They seemed utterly oblivious to the danger they were putting themselves in, a collective blissful ignorance.
The efforts of the schools to segregate and keep them safe were forgotten as soon as they left the school gates.
Much the same is happening at our universities.
They say youth is wasted on the young. So is education, apparently. Some of them will learn the hard way, sadly.
