ANOTHER one of our World Cup winning heroes, Jack Charlton has passed away without the knighthood he should have received, along with the rest of the squad, a team that won the World Cup 54 years ago and may never happen again.

I met Jack one night while he was doing a sportsman’s night talk at West Auckland club. He was playing the one armed bandit with a cigarette in his mouth and laughing and joking with the rest of the people around him.

How is it that civil servants who have in most cases basically just done the job asked of them receive knighthoods, when our World Cup winners are ignored?
