I AM joining the statue annihilators, the history abolitionists, and the culture “reconditioners” in abject apology for the heinous crimes committed by my ancestors, arguably the worst imperialist slave-owning colonialists ever.
I’m just off with my sledgehammer to re-shape Hadrian’s Wall.
That the Romans imposed tribal peace, familiarity with law, agricultural practices, camp-linking roads, later becoming beautiful English towns (those ending in -caster or -chester), the Graeco Roman language, literature, architecture, mail service, trade with British Chieftains for whom they constructed ornate palaces, (Cogidubnus’ villa at Fishbourne), taught the Brits the reasons for having a bath – all counts for nothing. They should have minded their own business, allowing the Brits to wallow in their mire, tribal conflict and even human sacrifice.
Furthermore, we must delete every vestige of those slave-owning Greeks (who came in on the Roman’s backs) including notions of politics, democracy, economics, drama, philosophy, literature/architecture.
We don’t need them in the new order. That Parthenon is such a monstrosity! And don’t omit the abusive Normans with their dominating castles and space-consuming churches (cathedrals), they only remind us of our violent, religious past. So what’s left? Not much.
Of the 200 words in this letter, 58 came from Greece and Rome!
