I AGREE with Boris that the UK has a responsibility to lead on climate change (Echo, Jan 5), but we must also lead in a responsible way. Emitting CO2 into the atmosphere is detrimental to all our futures, but surely we should be looking at climate change as a global issue not just a UK issue.
I would ask why the UK continues to import millions of tonnes of goods from abroad, which have a much larger carbon footprint than using the UK equivalent?
As the Committee on Climate Change says, we should be looking at our emissions from consumption, which includes imported goods, not just our emissions from production, otherwise we’re just offshoring our emissions and environmental responsibilities.
Let’s not lie to ourselves about actually making a positive difference to the global climate crisis and make some responsible, positive decisions that will also support British business and the British economy.
Catherine Fabi, Stockton.
