WHAT a pity that the beautiful picture of Whitby Abbey (Echo, Jan 30) was spoilt by the caption. The Abbey and indeed the whole of Whitby is the country of St Hilda, Caedmon, and Captain James Cook, not Dracula.

It seems that the contribution of Whitby to the shaping of this country and much of the rest of the world has been forgotten. Instead it is now known for a brief appearance there of a fictional villain in a book that 90 per cednt of people have never read.

Fair enough, let the Goths dress up if they wish, but there is more to this lovely historic town, particularly the Abbey than that.
