WHETHER a source of entertainment or fascination for children and adults alike, there is no doubt that fireworks as an organised activity can be safe and pleasurable.

The concern, of course, is that fireworks are not always about glitter and magic. For many people, they have reduced their lives to misery.

The issue is surely about safety and yet opportunities to buy fireworks are remarkably easy.

Accessible at most of the major supermarkets and some of the smaller retail outlets, this surely increases risk.

Some people might say that it is difficult to restrict the supply of fireworks, but there is responsibility on the part of retailers and suppliers, indeed everyone involved in the industry. Discretion should be applied.

As we have seen, fireworks in the wrong hands can spell danger and for those with insidious minds they can be lethal. Let's enjoy fireworks, but please, let us be responsible.

Those who manufacture, supply and sell fireworks need to realise that there can be serious consequences of misuse.
