HAVING read the disturbing letter headed “Durham shame” (HAS, Sept 20) regarding the alarming number of beggars and drunks harassing people in Durham City, I must agree that Durham – once the toast of famous travel writer Bill Bryson – is now a historic toilet full of filth and undesirables.

Durham County Council are more interested in the building of their new palace at The Sands.

Are they not aware that it is surrounded by villains and undesirables?

Here are a couple who have vowed never to return, due to the disgusting way the city is run.

My suggestion to those in County Hall is clean the city up instead of revelling in your own self-importance.
