THANK you, Giuseppe Bignardi (HAS, May 1), for a clear, balanced summary of the current Brexit situation.

Brian Sutherland’s reply (HAS, May 3) only highlights the widespread misinformation and fear that have got us into this mess, for some reason preferring to dredge up something irrelevant about the war.

Ignoring all of Mr Bignardi’s actual points, Mr Sutherland’s only response was to claim that Walter Hallstein (a founder of the EU) was “one of Adolf Hitler’s closest deputies”. But Hallstein wasn’t even a member of the Nazi party; he was employed as a lawyer for the regime before joining an artillery regiment and rising to the dizzying heights of First Lieutenant.

The whole point of the EU, with its Parliament, courts of Justice and Human Rights, freedom of movement and trade, was to “make war unthinkable and materially impossible”.

To quote Winston Churchill from 1946: “There is a remedy which would in a few years make all Europe free and happy.

“It is to re-create the European family, and to provide it with a structure under which it can dwell in peace, in safety and in freedom.

“We must build a kind of United States of Europe."
