THE Friends of Darlington Libraries are concerned at the recent article (Echo, Apr 3) in which the council leader, Stephen Harker attempts to justify the announcement in February 2016 of Darlington Borough Council’s intention to close Crown Street Library and to move the service to the Dolphin Centre.

He states that: “It is more important to hear what people in Darlington want, rather than just my view”. This was clearly not the case in the past, and it was only the closure of M&S and uncertainty around Binns that caused the council’s U-turn.

We are concerned that this statement by Councillor Harker may signal the start of a change of heart, and that if re-elected the ruling group may revisit their decision not to relocate.

We would like Councillor Harker to clarify his position.
