REFERRING to John Gilmore’s letter (HAS, Nov 26) about a director of Bet365 earning £265m last year.

That company of course is only one of many businesses dealing in gambling.

John’s letter made me think back to BBC’s Question Time programme (Nov 22) when the matter of the director’s earnings was discussed.

However in doing so not one of the panellists mentioned to what extent the gambling habits of the population was contributing towards poverty in the UK.

On visiting newsagents how often do you see customers investing in many scratch cards of different types as well as generous donations to the National Lottery in the hope of a large win? The UK is very fond of holding enquiries – perhaps we should have one on the effect of gambling on creating some poverty.
