JOHN GILMORE of Bishop Auckland suggests “the poor are poor because they haven’t got enough money as wages are low” (HAS, Sept 9).
Perhaps the reasoning should be turned around to a suggestion people are struggling on low wages because there are many, many households who have two large salaries coming in and they are able to purchase items without any problems, therefore keeping prices high.
It’s not the fault of those not well off.
We need to look again at salaries being received by those in top positions and bring back some common sense. I don’t think they will volunteer to have a reduced salary though.
A start should be made on those in top positions with local councils, then look to other occupations the NHS for example – those at the top in administration positions.
Those in charge at universities should also be included. These are just a few examples.
As a guide line none of these posts should be earning more than the prime minister.
