IT never ceases to amaze me how skilled our plumbers, builders, plasterers and electricians are.

They can install central heating systems, build complex structures, make walls smooth enough to paint, and rewire our homes.

All these are highly commendable, but you would think that they would master an answering machine or indeed use a telephone. Or perhaps understand what "next week" means.

After completing their training courses, do they then go on to study for NVQs in excuses and poor communication skills?
