WHAT leads Malcolm Stubley (HAS, Aug 2) and Ralph Musgrave (HAS, Aug 6) to think immigrants are not required to abide by our laws?

Apart from a few trivial exceptions alluded to by Mr Stubley - eg, Sikhs wearing turbans are exempt from wearing motorcycle crash helmets - immigrants as well as British people of religious and ethnic minorities are subject to the same laws as the rest of us.

Mr Musgrave puts forward the implausible theory that diversity and multiculturalism may ultimately destroy themselves, leading to a "boring pan-world monoculture". This seems odd, since multiculturalism amounts to nothing more than the acceptance of cultural diversity.

There are only two ways to achieve a monocultural state - ethnic cleansing (forcibly expelling minorities) or assimilation (compelling minorities to abandon their own cultural traditions and adapt to the majority). Neither is conducive to peace or social harmony.
