I WAS interested to read Chris Lloyd's Saturday column with its references to the east Cleveland ironstone mining industry (Echo, July 7).
From 1956 to 1962, I worked as an apprentice electrician at North Skelton Ironstone Mine.
The mine had a working depth of about 700ft and employed 200 people.
Some had been pitmen for many years and were carrying on a tradition.
I remember there being roof-falls and some fatalities but, by and large, conditions were not as hazardous as they might have been in a coal mine.
On January 17, 1964, North Skelton was the final mine to close and a 120-year-old industry was brought to an end.
