BY the time this letter arrives the ‘Co-op’ (or Beales as it has been) will have closed in Bishop Auckland.
I could weep each time I pass the store.
From being infants our mother would bring us from our village into town on market day by bus.
There were three bus companies in operation and services would run every 15 minutes.
On arrival we would head straight for the bustling market.
Being quite a large family, mam would have a full list of shopping to do.
From there we would work our way through the variety of shops to the Co-op.
Once in the store we loved exploring all the departments, but our real treat was afternoon tea in the cafe – bliss – what times.
Now it has gone and it’s so sad.
Another big empty gap in the town.
To those who are doing everything they can to regenerate this town: please don’t give up on us.
L Teasdale, Bishop Auckland
