RE Mrs AE Carr's letter asking if her Jones sewing machine, which must be at least 100 years old, was a record (HAS, May 30). By the description given I have the same model of machine which was passed down by my grandparents in the early 1900s.
As a boy, and the youngest of a family of seven lads, I well remember this machine working overtime to keep up with repairs in the early 1930s-40s.
It's still in use and working well, occasionally oiled, male operated, and now doing exactly the same duties as Mrs Carr's machine.
