I SAID that the Government had underestimated the strength of the senior citizens’ votes when the granny tax – the change in age-related personal tax allowances – was announced.

On May 2, for the sake of ten minutes, we can show them how we feel in the local elections. We cannot afford to wait until 2015 to show the strength of our anger.

David Cameron promised that universal pension benefits – including bus passes and the winter fuel allowance – were safe.

But he didn’t even wait for the first Budget to slash winter fuel payments.

Earlier this year, a spokesman said pensioners could lose winter fuel payments, bus passes and free TV licence after the next election.

Then came the granny tax so that we would pay more tax.

However, with the same stroke of the pen the Chancellor lowered the higher rate at which tax was paid, giving the super rich more money per minute than we get per week.
