I WATCHED Bill Gates’ recent Dimbleby lecture with total admiration, amazement, and an equal measure of disbelief.

The idea that one man and his foundation can act as a catalyst to totally eradicate polio from the planet in as little as six years would be the most incredible legacy to leave our children and grandchildren.

If polio can finally be totally eradicated from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria while not being reintroduced to any other country, Bill Gates will have left a signature on society far more indelible than the Microsoft logo.

But it should be remembered that millions of people and families all over the world will still be living with the debilitating effects of Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) for generations to come.

In the UK alone there are around 120,000 people who suffer from PPS, so worldwide there could be millions with a devastating neurological condition for which there is no cure.

We are here to help and support people living with the nightmare of PPS. We can be contacted free on 0800 018 0586, email: info@britishpolio.org.uk, or visit our website at britishpolio.org.uk Ted Hill MBE The British Polio Fellowship.
