BACK in the late 1990s while campaigning in Tony Blair’s Sedgefield constituency to keep the pound and not adopt the euro I was confronted by a group of Labour Party workers.

They demanded of me “what about the lads working for Nissan – your idea of not ditching the pound will threaten their jobs”.

Back then the idea was rife that if the UK did not join the euro manufacturing jobs would be under threat.

And we all know how that turned out – the total opposite was true.

We have been told by politicians who support continued membership of the EU, that three million jobs would be in jeopardy if we “left Europe” (they mean the EU).

An announcement earlier this month confirmed that 800 redundancies could result following Honda’s factory closing as a direct consequence of the serious ongoing slump in demand in the euro zone.

Does that mean only 2,999,200 jobs now “depend” on Europe?
