THE stupid acts by university students with regard to “milking” where they pour a bottle of milk over themselves in public places has now been upgraded to “porting” by some Durham University students (Echo, Dec 10).

It is sadly a sign of snobbery at its worst.

A few years ago, Durham City RFC ran an intercollegiate floodlit rugby tournament at City’s Hollow Drift ground. Hild Bede were playing University College (Castle). Hild Bede’s supporters were on the bankside and Castle were in the stand.

There were about 500 students all told, quite a voiciferous crowd with the Castle students using a battery powered megaphone to good effect. The banter was quite funny with a bit of edge until the Castle students went for the Hild Bede jugular by shouting across the pitch in unison in a rather upper crust accent: “Your fathers work for our fathers!”

It could have got quite nasty even though these two old colleges were in the same university.

I’ll bet the students who are “porting” are University College (Castle) students.
