I DIDN’T participate in White Ribbon Day, which is also known as the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, but I do support police action against domestic violence.
I would, however, question how often they should need to intervene in the same case.
We would not countenance someone keeping a dangerous wild animal as a domestic pet and expecting that every time it gets loose the police will come and put it back in its cage.
Appropriate sentencing for domestic assault should include a long-term ban on co-habiting.
A perpetrator should be returned to prison if he were found at a partner’s home or if a partner came to his home and he failed to call the police to have her removed.
Some would no doubt argue that this violates the victims’ freedom of choice.
But, as a society, we have a right and a duty to protect children from being raised in a violent environment and to try to prevent further children being conceived within a violent relationship.
