A pair of sunglasses can make or break an outfit and there has never been so much choice of styles. Lisa Haynes looks at what's available.

Celebrities are well practised at posing in sunglasses, but now they're getting into the fashion frame by designing them too.Victoria Beckham has increased her style status with her own dVb line of shades and Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie are all launching their own ranges.

But you don't have to be a celebrity to pull off the latest shades like the must-have Ray-Ban Wayfarer. There are plenty of styles to suit, whether you want retro chic or a daring injection of look-at-me colour.

''Sporting a good pair of sunglasses is a fabulous way to complete any outfit,'' says David Allen, MD of shadestation.co.uk.

''But ensure that they do the job that you bought them for - protecting your eyes from the sun - and make you look and feel good when the sun shines.''

Invest in some serious eye candy this summer and you could have your winning statement piece for the season.

Whether you want to do A-list allure or rock 'n' roll glam, popping on a pair of sunglasses can dramatically lead your look, depending on the style you plump for.

''Retro styles and the 'bug-eye' look championed by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham are here to stay, but sunglasses have become more decorative with cut-out designs and diamante embellishments,'' says Suzanne Clarkson, Dollond & Aitchison's resident style expert.

''This summer, look out for shades that double up as a gorgeous piece of jewellery.''

Colour was big on the catwalks for spring/summer and shades are no exception.

''While black and brown shades will always be popular, fashion is also embracing bold and metallic colours so there's a style to suit everyone this season,'' says Suzanne.

If you're feeling bold, bright shades are a fabulous way to inject a splash of colour into your summer wardrobe. But be warned: matching super-bright shades to your outfit could result in serious overkill.

Go bright and beautiful with ASOS' red Victoria large retro sunglasses, £10, True Spirit's green- or pink-rimmed aviators, £9.99 at Superdrug, or New Look's blue patterned shades, £8.

Nor does colour have to mean rainbow brights. White is also sizzling hot on the shades style radar.
