TODAY’S front page brings positive news for those who care about Darlington Football Club. But it must be stressed that the fight to save the Quakers from going out of business is far from over.

We welcome businessman Paul Wildes to the negotiating table and thank him for his interest in the plight of the Quakers, a proud little club with a history stretching back nearly 130 years.

We particularly like his proposal to run the club in partnership with supporters.

After a troubled decade, featuring three administrations, the local community needs to have a stake in the way the club is run.

But make no mistake – there is still a lot of work to do. There are still agreements to reach, legal documents to sign, and an administrator who has to be given the confidence that this proposal represents a sustainable future for Darlington FC.

These are critical days for the Quakers and the would-be investor needs to be shown that last week’s attendance against Fleetwood Town was not a one-off.

Saturday’s game against York is just as important, both in terms of raising funds, and demonstrating that the people of Darlington care about having a professional football club.

Craig Liddle and his team deserve continued support and so do the members of the Darlington FC Rescue Group who have, without exaggeration, worked round the clock to get the club this far.

Darlington FC finally has some positive momentum - let's do all we can to keep it going.
