IN these troubled economic times, with unprecedented public sector cuts about to have an impact on us all, there are plenty of reasons to feel down in the mouth.

But there is an event taking place this weekend which lifts us up above the gloom on a wave of celebration.

It makes us smile, it makes us glow with pride, and it is celebrating a special anniversary.

When Olympic 10,000-metre silver medallist Mike McLeod won the inaugural Great North Run 30 years ago, few could have believed that it would develop into arguably the most iconic, best-loved half-marathon in the world.

But that’s what we now have here in the North-East, thanks to the vision and leadership of Brendan Foster – an event which showcases our region like no other.

It is not just about the day itself – spectacular though that is. There are also incalculable health benefits in the time people spend out in the fresh air preparing for the Great North Run.

This year, 54,000 people will run from the Town Moor in Newcastle to the finishing line in South Shields and, as always, it will be an inspiring sight.

A few elite athletes will have ambitions to cross the line first. Most will be aiming to get round in times they can be proud of, while raising money for an array of charities.

We wish everyone who is taking part this year the best of luck and thank them for their efforts in supporting such worthy causes.

Here’s to the next 30 years of a very special event.
