A child has been left with a broken collar bone after the car they were in was involved in a crash with a supermarket lorry.

The crash on the A167 Darlington Road in Ferryhill saw a black Volkswagen Tiguan SUV and Sainsbury’s MAN truck collide on Friday (May 12) afternoon.

Police closed the road for several hours while emergency crews descended on the scene.

Paramedics and the air ambulance both attended with a child being taken to James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough with a broken collar bone.

The Northern Echo:

Another child was treated for minor injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing collision investigation unit police vans in the area as officers photographed and inspected the scene into the evening.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to a road traffic collision on Darlington Road in Ferryhill at 4.10 pm this afternoon.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“Three patients were taken to James Cook Hospital for further treatment, two by road and one by air."
