Plans for a controversial housing development in a densely populated area of Houghton Le-Spring is moving forward.

A vacant greenfield site is due to be developed into three new houses, according to plans submitted to the council.

The plans, filed in early February of 2023, detail three 3-bedroom terraced houses off Stoneleigh Close in the Burnside area of Houghton Le-Spring.

In a written objection, one resident said: “I am against this proposal as I have only just recently purchased a house in the area with the intention nothing would be built around us, also I am concerned for the elderly people in the area for the noise that this will bring.”

Another resident, Mr John Stoker of Abbey Drive, said: “Encroachment on to this small area of green space is unjustified and would harm the area. Green space is a valuable commodity for more reasons that can be stated.”

He added: “To lose this would bring harm to the community and property that it would encroach on children’s safety is paramount.”

In a statement, Sunderland City Council said: “The Local Planning Authority (LPA) is considering a planning application, submitted by a third party, for the erection of three terraced houses at land to the rear of 94 Abbey Drive in Burnside.”

They added: “To date, the LPA has not made a decision on the application, but it will take into account all representations submitted by local residents which raise ‘material’ planning considerations.”
