CHILDREN who entered a Tees Valley enterprise competition in which they were challenged to set up their own business have donated some of their profits to good causes.

Vice principal at Reid Street School in Darlington Joanne Davison said the group of ten Year 6 entrepreneurs had called themselves the Wavemakers and sold cakes and biscuits on National Nurses Day, generating £743.

The Wavemakers then made plants in mugs, stress toys, keyrings and painted stones, leading to a total profit of £1,527.

The children presented Darlington Memorial Hospital with £250 and £250 to the Mayor of Darlington’s charities Darlington Mind and St Teresa’s Hospice.

Mayor Cyndi Hughes said: “The children made an excellent presentation about their business ideas. These young people not only have heads for business, they also have hearts of gold.

“I am pleased and proud of their generous contributions to my charities - St Teresa’s Hospice and Darlington Mind - both well-loved charities serving the people of Darlington.”
