Pensioners who have not DWP Winter Fuel Payment and who are eligible can contact the benefits department today if they have not received their confirmation letter.

The lump sum payment of either £200 or £300 is given to households receiving Pension Credit claims to help with the higher cost of energy over the colder months.

The government information on this year's Winter Fuel Payment says that most payments were made automatically in November or December.

Eligible pensioners should have had a letter explaining:

  • how much they’ll get
  • which bank account it will be paid into - this is usually the same account as Pension Credit or other benefits

Anyone who has not had a letter or the money has not been paid into your account by today, January 29 2025, is being urged to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

If you’re waiting for a Pension Credit decision

This is the first year the DWP has means-tested the benefit, so instead of all pensioners over the age of 66 getting the payment, only those claiming certain benefits are eligible. Mostly this is Pension Credit, but can also include:

  • Universal Credit
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit

If you’ve applied for one of these benefits but have not received a decision yet, you do not need to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

You can also contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if you’re eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment and you:

  • need to report a change of circumstances
  • need to change your address or personal details
  • want to cancel future payments
  • want to return a payment

Report any change of circumstances as soon as possible - for example, if you stop getting a benefit, move house or move into a care home. These can affect how much Winter Fuel Payment you get.

When you contact the payment centre, you’ll need to tell them your personal details like:

  • your name
  • your address
  • your date of birth
  • your National Insurance number

You can either call the helpline on 0800 731 0160 or send a letter by post.
