What is Trust No One on Netflix about?

Directed by British documentary and TV director Luke Sewell, the film follows the curious and dangerous world of cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrencies, for those not in the know, are a form of online payment that can be exchanged for goods and services.

However, they use a decentralised technology known as blockchain which manages and records transactions across computers.

The true-crime documentary explores the story of Canada’s largest Cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX and the mysterious death od its founder Gerald "Gerry" Cotten.

Netflix's synopsis of the series reads: "In the paranoid world of cryptocurrency, there’s only one rule – Trust No One. So when Gerry Cotten, the CEO of Canada’s largest Cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX, dies in mysterious circumstances, he takes the password to $250 million of customers’ funds to the grave."

A group of Quadriga users raised questions via the online platform Telegram about the money and the odd circumstances around Gerry's death.

Thousands of customers paid QuadrigaCX to mine cryptocurrency for them and when he died on his honeymoon, he held an estimated £190million in his company accounts.

After concluding that the details didn't add up, many believe that Gerry faked his death and fled with the money as part of an "exit scam".

The film assesses whether or not this claim could be true as well as looking into Gerry's character, business and those around them to decide if they were involved or not.

What happened to Gerry Cotten?

In February 2018, Gerry Cotten went on a honeymoon with his new wife Jennifer Robertson where he died.

The couple checked into a Jaipur hospital just nine days into their holiday since he was suffering from an acute stomach ache.

Gerry suffered from Crohn's disease and was reported dead the following day from septic shock.

His death was investigated by Canada's Globe and Mail.

The newspaper looked into the details of the case and while his new wife returned to Canada with his body, they noted some odd details.

Gerry's name was misspelt on his death documents and he had prepared a will just days before his honeymoon.

Jennifer Robertson has reportedly said that her husband had promised to create a system that would give her access to the passwords and the £190 million when he died.

However, she has said that she never received it and investors in QuadrigaCX have not yet got their money back.
