LABOUR'S next candidate for Middlesbrough mayor will be Councillor Mick Thompson.

Cllr Thompson has been selected by Labour members as the party's candidate to be the elected mayor of the town in the election next May.

Current Middlesbrough Mayor, Dave Budd, announced in September that he wouldn't be standing for a second term in office.

Three candidates, Cllr Thompson, Cllr Denise Rooney and Cllr Lewis Young, were shortlisted before Labour members cast their votes earlier in November.

Speaking after his selection, Cllr Thompson said: ā€œIā€™m really pleased to have been selected as the candidate for Middlesbrough Mayor.

"We need a Labour Mayor in Middlesbrough to stand up for our area in these tough times."
