A FOUNTAIN has turned a vibrant hue as part of a campaign to eradicate violence against women and girls.

The fountain in Middlesbrough’s Centre Square has been dyed a striking shade of orange ahead of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The move also marks the start of Soroptimist International’s United Nations-backed 16 Days of Action Campaign.

Margaret Clark, of Soroptimist International, said: “Middlesbrough may be a small part of the world, but it’s a very important one, and we can really make a difference here. We’re delighted Middlesbrough Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office are playing their part in the global drive to ‘Orange the World’ and raise awareness.”

Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger added: “It’s a major issue that faces this area as it does so many others, but through a determined partnership of the public and voluntary sectors we will work together to eradicate it.”
