YOUNGSTERS will be turning back time to help celebrate an important anniversary.

Linthorpe Primary pupils are dressing up in Edwardian costumes this week to mark 1911, the year their school and the Transporter Bridge were built.

They were also showing off the home-grown fruit and vegetables they will be donating to the 2011 Middlesbrough Town Meal, which is being held in the town's Centre Square on Saturday, September 24, from noon to 4pm.

The produce is grown by community and school projects, as well as families and other individuals, before being gathered to feed thousands in an annual celebration of healthy eating.

At the fifth Town Meal, there will be a wide range of fun and entertainment including dance displays, pony rides, go karts, a Punch and Judy show, chef demonstrations, food and craft stalls, a produce and photography competition in the WI Tent, as well as other attractions.

Mark Fishpool, of Middlesbrough Environment City, said: "The Town Meal is a very special event for Middlesbrough and has been enjoyed by many thousands over the years.

"It brings people of all ages together to eat food which has been homegrown. Growing your own food has made a big comeback in the town over the past few years with allotments being in huge demand, which is brilliant to see."

Growers are being encouraged to enter their produce into the Town Meal show competition which will be judged by members of the Women's Institute in their tent. For an application form, call Middlesbrough Environment City on 01642-811300.
