PEOPLE are being urged to turn out in their droves to bid a fond farewell to forces' heroes preparing for life overseas.

Troops from the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) will be staging a freedommarch through Guisborough, east Cleveland, on Wednesday, July 20.

The parade will take in several streets in the town centre, before the battalion leaves the UK for postings in Cyprus and then Germany.

While in Cyprus, the troops will serve as Theatre Reinforcement Battalion, supporting ongoing operations in Afghanistan.

The parade will begin at Belmont House at 11.15am, before heading along New Road and into Westgate.

Troops will stop at the Market Cross for inspection by the Mayor of Guisborough, Councillor Mike Kilby.

The parade will then continue along Church Street, acknowledging the Cenotaph, before ending at Prior Pursglove College.

Coun Kilby said: "It is an honour for Guisborough Town Council to host such an event and welcome the battalion to our town. It is also an opportunity for our local communities to thank the troops for the courageous work they do."

Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters, who will be among the dignitaries, said: "I hope residents of Guisborough and visitors really turn out in force to say farewell to our service personnel and wish them a successful tour."
