TAXI drivers have had their say on multi-million pound plans to regenerate Stockton town centre.

Earlier this year, Stockton Borough Council unveiled a £20m, five-year plan to transform the High Street.

The idea is to create open space and improve links with the River Tees. Changes include on-street parking and remodelling the taxi facilities.

Council officers and taxi drivers met to discuss ideas for improving the service for themselves and customers.

Discussions included locations of taxi ranks, how many spaces there should be and how taxis should circulate.

Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "We asked for their ideas, giving them the opportunity to influence what we do and they gave some very constructive feedback."

Javid Khazir, secretary of Stockton Hackney Drivers' Association, said: "The council has agreed to consider some of our suggestions and we look forward to seeing the results."
