RESIDENTS are being given the chance to have their say on plans for a new cycle track in Middlesbrough.

The £700,000 proposal for Prissick Base, off Marton Road, is being devised to encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

The project is a pivotal part of Middlesbrough Council's Healthy Town Programme.

A one kilometre looped tarmac track, which will be open to all residents, will offer opportunities to beginners and keen cyclists.

Councillor Brenda Thompson, the council's executive member for public health and sport, said: "There's a great history of cycling in Middlesbrough and the Prissick Cycle Park will be a welcome addition to that rich heritage.

"We want to make more people more active, and cyclings a great way to get fit and have lots of fun at the same time.

"But it's important that we get it right - that's why the public consultation is so important as part of the planning process."

The track, which will be six to eight metres wide, will be funded jointly by Healthy Towns, NHS Middlesbrough and British Cycling, will also include a classroom, office and storage space.

Officers will be attending forthcoming Community Council meetings to present the project and answer questions.
