A PLANNING application has been submitted for a new roundabout and road access to the former SSI steelworks site.

The infrastructure is part of plans to redevelop the 150-acre Grangetown Prairie site, where work to clear the site started last month.

The development of the new road will also include upgrades to the existing Eston Road, which provides access into the South Tees Eco-Park and Freight Park from the A66 at Grangetown.

It will be widened as part of the plans to improve access to the Grangetown Prairie.

Works along the eastern side of Eston Road will create dedicated foot and cycleways, as well as a new four-arm roundabout at the bend in the road, with two new internal access roads into the Prairie site.

The application has been submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "I’m putting the building blocks in place to deliver a brighter future this site, a future that will see the creation of a world-class centre focused on the clean energy, offshore and innovation sectors."

If approved, work will be carried out by a local firm, Mr Houchen said.
