A NURSE who has spent the last 16-years looking after children with spinal conditions has received a national award for her dedication.

Cheryl Honeyman, a specialist nurse for the paediatric spine department working at James Cook University Hospital, was nominated for a Cavell Star Award for going above and beyond for her patients’ families.

She was first inspired to become a paediatric nurse after a hospital visit with her youngest child left her feeling that she could do a better job of caring for the youngsters.

She qualified in 2003 and says: “It’s hard work and very intense at times but such a rewarding career. When you’re caring for children it’s not just about them, it’s about their families too.

My role allows me to follow patients from their first clinic visit right through to discharge from the service which could be up to 18 years of age.

"So it’s a long time in which to get to know the families of the patients and lovely to know you have helped them through their childhood.” Ms Honeyman said she was 'humbled and honoured' to win the award.
