A SPECIAL service of rededication to mark the restoration of Saltburn’s War Memorial takes place on Sunday.

The memorial has been restored to its former glory thanks to funds raised by the local community, totalling almost £20,000.

The service, led by Saltburn Churches Together, takes place at 12.30pm. The Reverend Adam Reed will rededicate the memorial and Redcar and Cleveland mayor Barry Hunt will unveil a plaque.

The project has been led by Tees Heritage Trust in partnership with the Friends of Saltburn war memorial and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The granite cross was repaired and stabilised, and the weathered and slightly decayed sculpture was restored as closely as possible to its original appearance.

The council installed new wooden benches, a flagpole and wreath rail near the memorial and construction company Carillion relaid the stone paving free-of-charge, while survey work was donated by Billinghurst George.

The grade II-listed Saltburn war memorial was given to the town by anonymous donors was designed in the arts and crafts style by American sculptor Sir William Reynolds-Stephens, and was unveiled on Sunday, November 4, 1920.

Cllr Hunt, the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, said: “I am honoured to be unveiling the plaque marking the end to a lot of hard work from everyone involved in repairing and conserving Saltburn’s marvellous memorial to those who sacrificed their own lives in order to protect our country. Everyone involved should be proud of what they’ve achieved.” All are welcome at the war memorial service.
