A GARDENING project inspired by World War One is so good it has won students an award.

Pupils, aged between 12 and 15, from Nunthorpe Academy, designed an 'Outstanding' garden for the RHS It's Your Neighbourhood (IYN) Award Level Five.

The garden, which is at Nunthorpe railway station, includes plants, bunting, a scarecrow and a First World War plane.

The assessors of the award said: "The group is employing good gardening practices appropriate to the area, such as good plant choice, creativity and good maintenance, presentation and management."

IYN is a scheme for volunteer-led gardening groups that are focused on "cleaning up" and "greening up" their local area.

Lee Brown, principal at Nunthorpe Academy, said: "IYN is a fantastic initiative that not only benefits the local community, but our students too.

"Volunteering, and the valuable contribution it makes, helps our students to become thoroughly well-rounded individuals with a strong sense of community pride.

“The students should feel extremely proud of what they have achieved as the garden and platform at the station look fantastic and will benefit a lot of people in our area.”
