CONSTRUCTION is underway on the first phase of a project to improve the facilities of Redcar railway station as part of a £1.3m revamp.
Passenger facilities will be improved and the station vista will be enhanced before an outdoor portrait gallery, entitled Redcar Faces, is installed.
Councillor Helen McLuckie, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s cabinet member for highways, planning and transport, said the work was part of a wider scheme to improve railway stations in the borough.
She said: "This corner of the Redcar is being absolutely transformed for the benefit of the entire borough.
"We are fortunate to have seven railway stations in the borough and schemes like this, combined with work on other stations, will help us make the most of the network."
Phase one, which includes new lighting and enhancements to the station entrance and adjoining business centre, is due to be completed this year.
The Redcar Faces Project, featuring portraits of some of Redcar’s most recognisable people, will be installed in spring.
Future work, including enhanced security and platform lighting as well as work to extend the east bound platform, will be completed during subsequent phases.
The work is funded by the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund and Tees Valley Metro Project, in partnership with Network Rail and Northern Rail.
