VOLUNTEERS are needed to help carry out a survey of a town’s Grade II listed buildings.

Hartlepool Council and Tees Archaeology have been chosen by English Heritage to lead a volunteer survey of 187 Grade II listed buildings in the borough.

It’s part of a pilot scheme to trial different ways of gathering information on the condition of historic buildings around the country.

The survey will take the form of an external visual inspection carried out from public areas and a record made of the information gathered.

Survey volunteers will be given full training and mentoring and will follow formal guidelines to ensure that the survey information is recorded consistently.

Sarah Scarr, the council’s landscape planning and conservation team leader, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by English Heritage to take part in this pilot scheme.

“It’s a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in Hartlepool’s heritage to discover more about the area’s listed buildings and play an important role in helping to protect them.”

Training for survey volunteers will take place on Saturday, April 20 for anyone interested in taking part.
