BOMB disposal experts were called to the River Tees at Yarm after a mortar shell was found in the water.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team was called to the stretch of water under the viaduct in the town following the discovery earlier this evening.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said divers recovered a mortar shell from the water.
It was then made safe.
