ALMOST 2,000 youngsters enjoyed vital lessons in life at the annual Crucial crew sessions held over the last two weeks at RAF Leeming.

Organised by police and hosted at the base for the past 18 years, Crucial Crew is an interactive child safety event.

Altogether some 1,800 youngsters from schools across the area took part in the events.

They received safety presentations on a host of subjects including electrics, building sites, fire, the internet, roads and stranger danger.

Station commander, Group Captain Tony Innes, said: “The event is a terrific opportunity for hundreds of local school children to visit the station and, more importantly, to interactively learn about some of the hidden dangers that we all face today.”

The event was organised by PC Izzy Wilkinson of Northallerton police who said: “Crucial Crew gives Year Six pupils from Hambleton and Richmondshire the chance to see the potential dangers in a safe scenario setting.”

Presentations were supported by instructors from Taylor Wimpey, 95 Alive Road Safety, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue services, volunteers from Victim Support and the Women’s Institute.
