BOGUS callers claiming to be collecting for a cancer charity have targeted homes.

Police have warned residents in Stokesley to be vigilant after two homes in Tameside were reportedly targeted by three men claiming to represent Macmillan Cancer on Tuesday, September 13.

The men asked for bank details and sort codes and were said to have a ‘fairly intimidating’ demeanour according to police.

They left empty-handed after both residents refused to hand over any details.

The men were in their mid-twenties and two wore black jackets while the other man, who had a large build, wore a grey hoody.

Police say they have been conducting ‘reassurance’ patrols in the area and have asked residents report any suspicious callers immediately.

Police community support officer Dave Marshall, from Stokesley Police said: “Always be certain you know who you are dealing with.

“Make sure you ask for identification and if you are still unsure phone the company they claim to represent to check they are legitimate - genuine callers will be happy to wait.

“Never give your bank details to someone calling at your door and if you are suspicious of anyone contact the police or Crimestoppers straight away.”

North Yorkshire Police also advise people put a chain on the door before they open it and check a caller’s identification using the phone number in the telephone book, not on an identity card, before letting them in.

To report anything suspicious, contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
