PRISONERS have been released from hospital after the security van they were travelling in overturned earlier this week.
A total of nine inmates were being transferred from HMP Hull to other jails when the vehicle was involved in a collision at rush hour on the A64.
Three of the prisoners were taken to York Hospital and treated for their injuries. Security workers were assigned to sit at the prisoners’ bedside overnight whilst they received treatment.
Two of the inmates were released from hospital on Thursday, July 7, and returned to prison, while the third prisoner is believed to still be receiving treated for injuries to his spine.
The two other security workers in the van were uninjured, as were the motorists in the other two vehicles.
The accident happened just east of Tadcaster at about 5pm on Wednesday, July 6, and involved the van, a black Peugeot car and a white Ford Connect van.
The section of road was completely closed whilst police and fire crews dealt with the scene, leading to six-mile tailbacks which went on well into the evening.
