A NEW £125,000 floodlit pitch to benefit many sports teams is being laid in Thirsk after delays due to the weather.

Hambleton District Council has worked with groups like Thirsk and Northallerton hockey teams on the project.

The resurfacing of the much awaited pitch was delayed in December due to the snow but it is set to be laid by the end of February.

The new surface will be up to UK Hockey National League standards.

Neil Hellawell, Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre manager, said: "After a tricky start because of the bad weather this work is now back on track and should be ready for players at the end of the month,.

"It’s a great facility for the district and with its new surfacing and floodlights we expect it will be in even greater demand by users.

"It will also be home to Thirsk and Northallerton hockey teams and Football Mundial - a seven a-side National Football League."
